Most years at Christmas we visit family in Sydney.
Most years, I take the opportunity to sneak away and have some time away from the kids – they are having a ball with their cousins anyway. To my husband’s horror, I have this stirling ability to find a High Tea establishment wherever we are.

Well, after this many years it had best not be horror and be at least grudging amusement.
I loves me my high tea!

Anyway, one of my escapes was to Mosman. Hubby was interested in the walk past Balmoral Head, and that was pleasant, but I had my eye on afternoon tea!

Gunner’s Barracks was my target this time – with a name like that, how could I resist? For some reason they aren’t marketing their offerings as High Tea, simply as afternoon tea, but it met all my requirements!
Three tier stands, tea in pots with proper china cups – I was well satisfied, I can tell you!

Darlinghurst’s Victoria Room

The Victoria Room in Darlinghurst is the most amazing experience – its totally like stepping back in time to the days of British empire. but believe it or not, this incredible looking place is a converted garage!

We had the nicest high tea here – not the least bit cheap, but worth every penny!
The Victoria Room only does High Tea on the weekends, and only in the afternoons (as is, of course, proper – but sometimes I want one in the morning too, dammit! ).

Traditional High Tea at Sir Stamford at Circular Quay

Last christmas, while visiting in family in Sydney, we snuck out and made a trip to town.
In between shopping, with a whole pile of bags between us, we managed to fit in a lovely high tea!

They advertise a “seasonal assortment of savoury sandwiches, fluffy homemade scones, tantalising sweet petit fours and cakes, served on a traditional tiered platter with a glass of sparkling wine and your choice of Ronnefeldt Tea.” and they do it very well.

We enjoyed ourselves thoroughly and recommend that you do, too, if you are in the area and need a little something more in the afternoon.
